Sorry I didn't move this earlier! I left the post there too, but here it is again:
Here's the article: The Sunday Times         May 14, 2006 Pop: New Kids in Town: James Morrison DAN CAIRNS Who is he? A 21-year-old with a voice that sounds as if its owner wakes each day and gargles with sand. Hewn from the same parched rock that gave us Ray Lamontagne, the British newcomer is one of those artists who make you think: what on earth did this boy grow up listening to, and how can he be writing songs as world-weary as this when hes only just started shaving? A troubled childhood and an early introduction to blues music bear glorious fruit in a body of work that should enthuse radio programmers (Morrisons poster-boy looks wont hurt him here) while appealing to fans of edgier fare. The song Better Man encapsulates his gifts: a keening lament, it sounds soaked in real tears, as opposed to the on-tap, Bluntian variety. Whens the record out? Download Better Man for free at www.timesonline.co.uk/music. Morrisons debut album, Undiscovered, follows in July on Polydor. Can I see him live? Eve Club, W1 (Thu). and don't bother the download link there- it doesn't work... I ripped the song off myspace And you can watch his EPK at his myspace page: http://myspace.com/jamesmorrisonmusic |

Re: James Morrison | ||

James has a good voice but honestly he sounds to me like kind of a rip off of Ray. Looks like Polydor thinks there's some money in folk music now. Nothing against him personally, but to even mention him in the same breath as Ray is kind of an insult. Maybe it's because he's so young, but I don't feel like he means what he sings. This happens when big labels get involved trying to "make" someone. It took Ray years of hard living and searching his soul to sing and write songs like he does. James doesn't hold a candle to Ray no mater how good he sings or looks. Ray has a depth and an honesty that really touches people, all the poster boys folk singers will never touch this. It's sad to see big record labels cash in like this. I think it has ruined a lot of good artist, I hope it doesn't turn out like this for James.

I say bring it on, we can handle more singer/songwriters, pretty or not. Remember, I'm sure many a folk listened to Ray the first time and said why as well?
Why not stick with Van, Joe Cocker, Stephen Stills, John Martyn, Paul Weller and Ben Harper to name just a few? It's ever evolving and flowing, this thing called, the recording industry and I'm all for folk music becomming mainstream again. It use to be in the late 1950's and throughout the 1960's. The kid not some A.I. pop tart The kid's got talent, give him a stage! |

I found video of James doing "You Give Me Something" on Jools Holland at YouTube & I converted it to the ipod .mp4 format & uploaded it HERE. To me, he hands down has a very unique voice. When I watched the Grey's Anatomy episode looking for any Ray songs (since someone thought Ray was on that episode) I knew right away that "Better Man" was the song that caused confusion... it was playing low in the background, but his voice caught me- I knew it was no Ray, but still special. We'll have to wait to see what happens I guess
I agree with irishcornboy- he knows what he's talking about!! |

I just heard "you give me something" on the radio.

I've had a promo of the album for a few weeks, it really is something special and he will do very well - he's getting lots of radio play with 'You Give Me Something' already

Re: James Morrison | ||

I've heard him a few times over the past month at night-time on the same station. But night-time dj's tend to be music-lovers, they play what they want but daytime dj's just play the playlist. So a daytime airing is a bigger deal.
I'm starting to think like someone in Marketing, help me..... Ray LaMontagne XM Loft Sessions: "4 chords...boom, major record deal".

Still in marketing mode, you maybe right. The record company may hold back and do the "Break America" thing next year
I saw some interview where some English singer/group was asked about breaking America. Mathew Knowles the manager of Destinys' Child was there. He said "break America? we sold more records in Europe, and Asia even more, don't waste your time" You never know what their plan is. You got the Spice Girls the same time as the rest of us, so you can't complain. Ray LaMontagne XM Loft Sessions: "4 chords...boom, major record deal".

Re: James Morrison | ||

Quite surprisingly as well the track Better Man isn't on the album

Re: James Morrison | ||

"Better Man" isn't on there???? How can that be
"You got the Spice Girls the same time as the rest of us, so you can't complain" But just considering that it took James Blunt, Daniel Powter, & KT Tunstall around a year to finally release their albums in the US- It might be 2 or 3 years until James makes it!! Unless he has that kind of success in the UK tomvegas check your inbox I also downloaded the EPK from his website- you can download it HERE |

Re: James Morrison | ||

I think Better Man isn't on there because it was available as a free download, but still does seem a bit strange as the track is so strong. Anyway the full tracklisting is :
1_Under The Influence 2_You Give Me Something 3_Wonderful World 4_The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore 5_One Last Chance 6_Undiscovered 7_The Letter 8_Call The Police 9_This Boy 10_If The Rain Must Fall 11_How Come 12_The Last Goodbye It's a very slick, very well produced album, I think he seems to have had a lot of money spent on him. It is a very good album but I think it would have been even better if it was a little rawer. I'll send you something in the next few days |
